Charles-Auguste Paillard

Since the 16th century, Switzerland has been a global leader in precision watchmaking, with its timepieces renowned for precision, reliability and timeless elegance. Among the many legendary yet underappreciated Swiss brands, Charles-Auguste Paillard (CAP) stands as a paragon of innovation and craftsmanship.

Founded to honor its eponymous founder—a master watchmaker and pioneer—CAP traces its roots to 1840, when Charles-Auguste Paillard was born in Sainte-Croix, Switzerland, into a horology-focused family. At 17, he apprenticed in Brazil with his uncle, a marine chronometer maker, where he grew obsessed with solving rust and humidity issues plaguing steel hairsprings in maritime environments.

Returning to Geneva in 1862, Paillard worked as a regulator at Patek Philippe while pursuing material research. After 15 years of rigorous experimentation, he developed a groundbreaking palladium-based alloy. In 1877, he unveiled the world’s first anti-oxidation and anti-magnetic hairspring, a revolution in horology that earned widespread acclaim.

In 1887, Paillard licensed his patent to Geneva’s Non-Magnetic Watch Company, whose Swiss and US-made movements featured his patented components marked “Patented by Paillard.” In 1893, the brand’s certified precision watches—including minute repeaters and perpetual calendars—shone at the Chicago World’s Fair.

Paillard declined to join a hairspring manufacturing monopoly in 1895 and ceased production; he passed away in Geneva the same year. Yet his legacy endured: watches using his technology sold in the US until the 1910s, and his palladium alloy laid the foundation for 20th-century anti-magnetic watch innovation.
